No, love is not only social and emotional, but physical. A person needs to be able to connect with the person physically as well as emotionally (physically not only meaning sex). Though, if meeting is possible and frequent, then maybe there’s a possibility. I think it’s more successful for older people because of the flexibility to go wherever and meet whomever you want.
